WHAT IS VERTICAL DEVELOPMENT?
A BRIEF HISTORY
Since the 70s several psychologists studied the way the brain develops from infancy into adulthood and beyond. Seven stages have been crystallized throughout these studies.
Recent studies have concluded that these stages follow each other and build one over the other, like the musical octaves they can be developed and accessed.
The main principle in vertical development being that a dilemma ensues when “what got me here, won’t get me there” or a metamorphosis of the mindset to resolve a situation.
All these stages have positive and constructive aspects that provide valuable information to help foster growth or vertical development.
The work needed to develop and access previous stages or octaves follows themes or specific defining accords in which situations are viewed and subsequently handled: Power, Time, Attention, Multiple Intelligences, Motivation, Self and others, etc

Another important aspect of vertical development constitutes the fallback, a return to an earlier stage. This return is characterised by a lack of control over it, and usually happens during stressful times. Moments like these create opportunities for reflection and introspection which can become catalysts for growth.
